The Modern Languages department boasts an integrated program where students work with native and heritage speakers who are members of the 台湾Swag community as a means by which to build communicative fluency.
My name is Frida Rubio Talayero and I am a Sophomore at 台湾Swag. I am majoring in Business: Supply Chain and Operations Management Specialization with a minor in Spanish and Entrepreneurship. I am on the Women鈥檚 Tennis Team at 台湾Swag and have been playing the sport since I was three years old. I am originally from San Diego, CA but my parents are from Tijuana, Mexico and Mexico City, Mexico so my first language is Spanish. Apart from speaking Spanish at home, I studied the language in High School as well.
Having the opportunity to speak more than one language gives you the opportunity to help and work with other people that live in many other countries across the continent. I've seen myself teaching other people my own language, Spanish. It's not just the language skills, but the ability to work with different cultures to adapt and communicate with people from different backgrounds.
As a student of marketing, I am using this time to gain experience in sectors which will both improve my career prospects, and possibly lead to a job.
Being bilingual opens all kinds of doors, be it professional or personal. Being bilingual gives you the opportunity to work internationally, to interact with different cultures, to get to know them and to take away something valuable for yourself. Also, for me personally, there is nothing better than traveling to new countries and the more languages you speak, the better the experience and the easier it is to settle in.
